VISUAL

What this means:

Each person has a preferred method of receiving and storing information. It is not always the same in every situation, but we each have an overall preferred method.

Some of the common characteristics of a visual person:

  • Memorizes by seeing pictures.

  • Often has trouble remembering things other than pictures.

  • Interested in how things look.

  • Learns by reading.

  • Typically organized, neat and well-groomed because he/she wants to look good, and he/she expects the same of others.

  • More imaginative and may have difficulty putting his/her ideas in words.

  • Speaks faster than the general population because his/her information is stored as pictures and it takes a lot of words to get them out!

  • Tends to prefer in-person interactions so that he/she can see the other person's reactions.

  • Wants to see or be shown concepts, ideas or how something is done.

  • Wants to see the big picture.

  • May not remember what people have said and become confused if he/she receives too many verbal instructions.

  • Remembers faces more easily than names.

  • Becomes distracted by visual activity and less so by noise.

The other primary methods:

The other primary methods of receiving and storing information are:  kinesthetic, auditory, and auditory digital. For more information about how these systems interact with each other, listen to this excerpt from our "I think I know what I think you said..." CD.

How you can use this:

The first rule of Maximum Communication is that the communication is the responsibility of the communicator. Knowing your system and the system of the other person or persons will allow you to convey your information in a way they will be able to understand.
